ch 10

One of the things that they talked about was layoffs, and how they affect the business. I agree it can very easily change the atmosphere of the company and also how people do their work. Another thing that the book talked about was inflation and how long term can change some things. One thing that I have thought about in choosing a carrier is that inflation will change but the percentage will never change it more. I work in insurance and people will always need to pay it and if inflation changes so do the prices and then my pay will also go change with it. It is a very safe carrier and a good carrier to be in.

reflection

well it looks like we are a little behind but still moving forward we discussed whether workers today work harder than those in past generations did. It was interesting to see both sides of this debate. On the one side there seems to be a lot more relaxed working environments it often seems like people are just surfing the internet and texting their friends. However many jobs now expect you to be available anytime anywhere. With new technology, you are expected to answer your phone or emails whether you are at work or at home. .

ch 9 developing employees for future success

There are 4 main ways that people can develop themselves. 1 a formal education 2 job experiences 3 interpersonal relationships 4 assessment. All of these are needed to grow but if you don’t have one you need to be stronger in another. Some places in a large company will have people rotate positions to generate skills and this way people are not so demanding when they miss a day of work or something.
I liked the carrier management process, self assessment-reality check- goal setting-action planning. I was reading about this and I think that it is a great tool to help managers or employees to grow and be better for their company.

reflection 2/9

Today in class we talked about other people in the company and how we can train them and how bosses can do reviews better. This way the work force will be a better place. I think that it s funny the way people use the system to their advantage and abuse it, with age or race discrimination. Yes it is a problem that we do need that law but there is no reason to have it so strict that we need to watch our but so bad. Like if you hire someone else because they are black or white. It is just ridicules.

Ch 8 Managing Employees' Performance

There are several ways for effective performance management.
1- Fit with strategy, 2- Validity, 3. Reliability 4- Acceptability, 5- Specific Feedback. All of these are good way how an employee is doing and performing. I like the reliability, if a employee is doing his or her job and you can count on them to do what is needed and on time that that is good enough for me. I feel that I have a very high expectation for people at work and I think that I as well as them should work hard and be dependable to do your job fast and correct.
In the book it talks about rating workers on a scale of how they are doing. I think in my job it is either a yes or no, we keep you or we don’t that simple. Some people if we think that they are half way there we try them out for a while and then if they can hack it good buy this job not for you.
QUESTION
Do you think that it is better to tell them you are reviewing them or just do a review on them? And then just fire them if they are not doing well, and not try to teach them to do the job right or teach them and give them one more shot?

Training Reflection

Scott Brown Form Tahitian Noni was here and he went through the training that they do there at the company. They have a good training every week. Where I work we have tried to get good training every week but it falls apart every other week and isn’t very useful also. I think that we will try it again and do it better.
I liked the slide about all the different types of training. And that a company needs to try and use as many as they can to help with the training process.
Also we need to get feedback on the training. We could have the people write a subjection box to put their ideas in. I think that maybe even have them do the training also.
My company needs to do something. But no training is better than bad training

Ch 7 Training Employees

Was it this class that we talked about training and how important it is, I don’t think that it was. In another class Taute is the teacher. He was talking about that. I agree that it is important also if you are going to go to a company and they have average training then they should only expect to have average results. To me it shows that a company is not very organized and wants to have results but isn’t willing to put the time or money into training.
Work environment is also touched on in this chapter. I think that this is very important because people need to like their work place and the atmosphere that is there. If it is better than more people will want to work there and work harder. Like Google a great place to work and a wonderful environment and everyone wants to work there.
In training there are many ways to go about training you can give them a DVD and say watch and learn. Have a person teach them or just maybe send them out to learn as they go with some guidance on the way. And for different jobs there are better was or the correct was to do it for each situation. This is why some fields have internship that people can come learn to do the work in real life situations like (Doctor, lawyer, and carpenter, etc.)
So my question is what is the way that you think most people like to be trained? And which way is best for the employer?

reflection 2/2

Today in class we talked about how different jobs and fire people easily. I’m glad that we are able to do this because I can’t get the nerve to fire 2 people at my job. I wish that I could but I feel bad. They don’t work and their production is not up to par. So I’m going to slowly tell them not to come in day in and day out more and more and then I hope that they will just quit. We will see.

Chapter 6

One of the things that this chapter talks about is interviewing people. There are several ways to have interviews, nondirective, structured, situational, behavior description and panel interviews. There are advantages and disadvantages to both. I think that people put out there best foot forward for the interview and the comeback 20% when they are working. And so I think if they are not 20 % better then what you want then down the road you will get a lesser person.

For my job I need to interview people on a weekly basis because we are growing at a fast rate. And always need more people to do work. The problem is that we don’t have a high enough class of person coming in to get a job.

This leads me into my question how can I put out a job posting that will entice people of a higher class to come work for us?
